Obituary

DARTMOUTH -- Bradleigh (Bowen) Lewis, 85, of Dartmouth died Sunday, July 11, 2004, at Heritage of Dartmouth after a period of declining health. She was the widow of Dr. Emery O. Lewis.

She was born in Charlestown, N.H., and attended the University of New Hampshire, then transferred to Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Hanover, where she received her Registered Nurse degree.

Mrs. Lewis resided in North Dartmouth for more than 50 years, and was a homemaker with extensive volunteer service in the community.

She was at various times a Corporator of the New Bedford Institute for Savings, a member of the Ladies Branch of the New Bedford Port Society, a Lumbard volunteer at St. Luke's Hospital, Cub Scout den mother, Brownie Scout leader, New Bedford Child and Family Service board member, P.T.A. volunteer at Job S. Gidley School and a member of the Dartmouth Town Meeting. She and her family hosted three American Field Service students. She was a long-time member of Grace Episcopal Church, the Wamsutta Club and Women's Luncheon Club.

She enjoyed Barney's Joy beach and supported many environmental causes. She established an endowed scholarship for undergraduates intending to study medicine at the University of Vermont. She supported several organizations that provide services for developmentally disabled children and adults.

Survivors include her son, David K. Lewis, of Westwood; and her daughter Barbara B. Powell, of Williston, Vt.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was the sister of two late sisters.

Visiting hours at the WILSON CHAPEL, 479 County St., at the corner of Elm St. New Bedford, Ma. on Thursday July 15, 2004, from 5-8 P.M. Her memorial service will take place on Friday July 16, 2004, at 11 A.M. in the Grace Episcopal Church, 422 County St. corner of School St., New Bedford, Ma., followed by a reception at the Wamsutta Club across the street.
