John N. McDonald age 89 of West Wareham, formerly of Brockton died Saturday February 2, 2013 at the Tobey Hospital in Wareham after a brief illness. He was the devoted husband for 63 years of Arlene A. (Ward) McDonald. John was born in Brockton a son of the late John J. and Lillian (Cleary) McDonald and lived most of his life in Brockton before moving to Wareham in 1988. He left Brockton High School to serve in the US Coast Guard during WWII and received his diploma in a ceremony a few years ago.
In 1982 John retired from the Brockton Fire Department after 35 years of service. He loved to whistle and putter around the house, do crossword puzzles and take road trips, especially to Florida. He will be remembered as a kind, understanding and caring man who was always ready to help someone in need.
John was the father of Carol Haskell and her husband James of Port Charlotte, FL; Marjorie Sheridan and her husband Robert of Brockton; James McDonald and his partner Richard Bacon of New York City and the late John J. McDonald and his widow Gail of Rockland. He leaves his grandchildren Joseph McDonald, Jennifer Harris, Brian Haskell, Dennis and Kelsey Sheridan and Justin McDonald, great-granddaughter Lily Harris and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Charles and Francis McDonald.
Visiting hours will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (Rte 123) Brockton Wednesday 4-7 pm. Funeral Service and burial will be private. Please consider donations in John’s name to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
