Shaw, Barry Martin, Ph.D., age 73, a retired physicist and instructor at the Naval War College in Newport, died suddenly on Monday afternoon, January 28, 2013, after suffering a heart attack at his home in Natick, MA. He was the devoted husband of Norma J. (Cawley) Shaw for 22 years.
Born, raised and educated in London, England, he was a son of the late William Frederick and Elsie (McGuire) Shaw. Barry earned a degree in Mathematics from Kings College and then left England for Furman University in South Carolina. Noted for his abilities in track and field, he was able to complete his Masters’ Degree through scholarship funds. Barry went on to receive his Doctor of Physics from the University of Tennessee.
Barry opted to stay in the States and would eventually become a naturalized citizen. After several years in business, he moved to Coventry where he became employed as the CEO of Engineered Yarns. 1989 would be a year of great change for Barry. He married Norma, settled in Barrington after a wonderful honeymoon in Paris, and completely changed careers. Joining the world of academics, Barry happily taught physics and mathematics courses at the Naval War College until he retired. An enthusiastic if not “hyper” sports fan, he followed teams and sports from all over the world, his favorite being the Chelsea Football Club. A master bridge player, Barry also enjoyed a good chess challenge. He moved to Natick two years ago.
He is survived by Norma; her daughters Ellen E. Banthin and her husband Chris, and Mary E. Sullivan, all of Natick, MA; two grandchildren, Emily and Noah; and two brothers, John Shaw and his wife Carol of Haywood, CA, and Dudley Shaw and his wife Valerie of Devon, England.
Relatives and friends may visit with his family on Friday, February 1st at the John Everett & Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park Street at Natick Common, Natick, from 10:00a.m. until the start of his Funeral Service at 11:30.
