New Bedford – Gilbert C. Mello, age 87, died on Thursday, January 24 at Hathaway Manor Nursing Home with his family by his side. Mr. Mello is the beloved widower of Mary (Souza) Mello. He is survived by his loving daughters Patricia A. Sylvia, wife of Stephen, of Dartmouth and Evelyn Hill wife of Max of Apollo Beach, Florida; his loving grandchildren: Amy Sylvia, Joseph Sylvia and Julie Simpson; as well as 4 great grandchildren: Timothy, Nickolas, Kadie and Rose.
Mr. Mello was born in New Bedford, son of the late Cecelia (Pacheco) and Agostinho Cabral Mello. He was the head Chef at Tobey Hospital in Wareham for 27 years. Prior to his work at Tobey, he was the chef at Sassaquin Hospital. Mr. Mello was a proud veteran of U.S. Navy, serving his country during WWll as well as in Pacific where he attained the rank of the ships Cook 1St class. He was the 1st Chef at Camp Cachalot Boy Scouts camp. He was a great husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Private services were held at the Perry Funeral Home.
