CHICOPEE – Leroy F. “Moose” Miller, 80, of Doverbrook Estates in Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. He passed into Eternal Life at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his caregivers. He was born in Tell City, Indiana on December 12, 1932, a son of the late George M. and Lillie (Tabor) Miller. He was raised and schooled in Tell City and lived there for many years. In 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Airman First Class. In 1955, he reenlisted and served until he was discharged in 1962 from Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1962, he reenlisted from Westover and served until 1966, attaining the rank of Tech Sergeant. He reenlisted for the final time in 1966 and served his country during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Senior Master Sergeant after 21 years of dedicated service to his country. While serving at Westover, Moose settled in Holyoke around 1957 where he lived until 1967. In 1968, he moved to Chicopee with his wife, Betty, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Following his military service, Moose began a new career as a clerk at the United States Postal Service Bulk Mail Center on Tapley Street in Springfield where he was employed for 20 years before retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus in Chicopee, a member of the Tigers Athletic Club in Chicopee Falls and a recent member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his dear brothers and sister, George, Kenwood, and Harold Miller, and Juanita Purdy. He leaves his devoted wife and best friend, Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Latour) Miller. They were married on January 19, 1963 at Saint Jerome Church in Holyoke and recently celebrated 50 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving sons, John S. Miller and his wife, Donna of Weirsdale, FL and Stephen J. Miller and his wife, Carol of Cabot, AR; his 12 cherished grandchildren; his two cherished great grandchildren; his dear sister, Beatrice Smith of Tell City, IN; his many dear nephews, nieces, friends; and his faithful canine companion, “Tish”. His relatives and friends are invited to attend a Committal Service with Military Honors on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
