Obituary

Hugh James "Jim" Shanahan, Jr., 85, recently of Denver, CO, died January 16, 2013 at the VA Hospital in Denver after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Katherine (Hickey) Shanahan of Newton, MA and father of the late Mark J. Shanahan.

Born in New Bedford and the only son of the late Hugh J. and Nora (Barry) Shanahan, he lived in New Bedford and Fairhaven before moving to Colorado in 2010.

He was formerly employed as an engineer at Revere Copper and Brass in New Bedford for many years until his retirement. While living in Fairhaven, he was an active member of the Fairhaven Town Finance Committee, the St. Joseph's Couples Club, and the Fairhaven Music Parents.

Mr. Shanahan served with distinction in the U.S. Marines during World War II, where he was active in the Pacific theatre, and also served in the Korean War. He enjoyed golfing and gardening.

Survivors include 2 sons, Daniel H. Shanahan of Rhinecliff, NY and James M. Shanahan of Cambridge, MA; and 3 daughters, Katherine S. Deshaies of Raynham, MA, Joan S. Moore of Northborough, MA and Nancy S. Potter of Castle Pines, CO. He is also survived by his 9 grandchildren.

Funeral Mass at 9 AM in St. Mary's Church, New Bedford. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
