Anne Meley Stevenson of 26 Bel Aire Dr, Mystic, died Saturday, July 3rd, 2004 at home with her family by her side.
She was born on May 9, 1929 to Dewitt Provost Meley and Virginia Meley and attended school in Mt. Airy and Germantown, PA. She married James F. Stevenson on July 6th, 1949 and a short time later they moved to West Hartford, CT where they lived for 35 years and raised four sons. She was a member of St. James’s Episcopal Church, served on the vestry and coordinated the annual Antiques Show Tea Room fundraiser for many years.
In 1985 following semi-retirement, she and her husband moved to Mystic, CT where she enjoyed a perpetual vacation. Anne managed the Mystic River Antiques on Holmes St. in downtown Mystic before she began her many years of volunteer work. She served on the board of the Mystic River Historical Society, volunteered at the Mystic Art Association and the Mystic Chamber of Commerce. Anne was very active at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, serving twice on the vestry, chairing the Christmas Bazaar and the Altar Guild Flower Committee for several years. She was a 14 year member of the Mystic Garden Club and served as Chairwoman of the Civic and Conservation Committees, and was recently bestowed an Honorary Membership. In her spare time, she enjoyed many hobbies including bird watching, quilting, camping and, most especially, gardening.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son and his wife Thomas & Gail Stevenson of Weston, granddaughter and her husband Jennifer & Chris Hulse of Wilton, grandson Kevin Stevenson of Santa Cruz, CA, great grandchildren Betsy & Christopher Hulse, also of Wilton. She is also survived by her son and his wife, Jay & Eileen Stevenson of Lumberton, N.J, grandson Christian Stevenson of Boston, MA, granddaughter Julia Stevenson of Hoboken, NJ and granddaughters Dana & Katie Stevenson of Lumberton, NJ; her son Peter and his wife Linda Laino-Stevenson of Tamworth, NH., granddaughter Syna September Stevenson; and her son Christopher Stevenson of 29 Palms, CA.
She was predeceased by her sister Virginia Neil, nephew Thomas Neil, and her two half brothers James and Robert Maguire.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday from 6-8pm at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic.
A public funeral service will be held at St. Marks Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl St. on Friday at 11am with a reception at the church immediately following the service. The prelude to the service will be a selection of Anne’s favorite hymns.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Anne’s memory may be directed to St. Mark’s Memorial Garden.
