Obituary

Murphy, Herbert T. “Bert” of Oakridge, TN, recently of Quincy died January 9, 2013.

Beloved husband of Marjorie Elaine Clay of Old Orchard Beach Maine. Father of Kevin H. Murphy and his wife Laura of Waterford CT, Kathy Murphy Barry and her husband Robert of Torrance CA and Julie A. Manning of Quincy. Son of the late Harold J. Murphy and Mary (Tupper) Murphy. Grandfather of Kevin C. Murphy and his wife Melissa of NC, Stephanie Murphy Woodward and her husband Jason of GA, Samantha Barry of CA, Christian Barry and his wife Jennifer of OR, Jade Elizabeth Manning of Quincy, and Victor Chiburis of CT. Great-grandfather of Kevin and Alana Murphy , Gidget Woodward and Sean Barry. Brother of Jean Goodwin of Wilbraham MA, Harold "Larry" Murphy and his wife Eunice of North Haven CT and David Murphy of Wisconsin. Herbert was the former husband of Velma (Longo) Murphy of Canton.

Bert as he liked to be called, was born August 20, 1928 in Springfield Massachusetts and died January 9, 2013 after a short illness in Milton MA. He was residing in Quincy MA, with his daughter Julie and granddaughter Jade Elizabeth at the time of his death.

Bert was raised in Wilbraham MA, was graduated from Commerce High School in Springfield MA, entered the US NAVY in 1946 and was Honorably Discharged in 1948. He had a distinguished career spanning 45 years and rose to the position of big kahuna and Treasurer at Stone & Webster Engineering Inc. His career involved travel to such places as Brazil, Jamaica, Algeria, Oswego and Buffalo New York, Lexington Kentucky and concluded in Boston MA. Bert was a past commander of the American Legion Post 24 in Canton , MA. He loved playing golf, up to 36 holes a day, working in his yard and around the house, driving his BMW, and his 1973 Custom Corvette Stingray. He also enjoyed his dry martinis in the late afternoon, dining out and debating current politics. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure to have known him.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours on Monday 2-4 P.M. in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY.

Following the visitation a funeral service will be celebrated at 4 PM in Keohane Funeral Home.

Cremation will follow.
