Obituary

MAJOR WILLIAM J. “BILL” SCANLAN, USAF, 89, of Louisville, passed away on January 5, 2013. Major Scanlan was a graduate of St X (’41) as were both his older brothers, Colonel Joseph W. Scanlan, USAF (’37) and Lieutenant John Vincent “Jack” Scanlan (’39) USAAF, who was a fighter pilot killed in action in World War II. Major Scanlan served in World War II and was awarded the Air Medal with clusters and other awards. He was also a combat veteran of the Vietnam War where he flew 60 combat missions. He held a commercial pilot’s rating, was a member and past president of the Hunters Club, a member of the Bonnycastle Club, Retired Officers Association, Airline Owners and Pilots Association and St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Michael and Catherine Ann Scanlan; sister, Catherine Taylor (Dudley) and both brothers, Joseph W. Scanlan (June) as well as John V. Scanlan. He is survived by his sister, Vera Scanlan Cockrell (John, deceased), seven nieces, Anne, Teri, Sue, Jane, Chris, Dawn and Kim; five nephews, Pat, Jack, Doug, David, and Trip and many loving great nieces and great nephews. The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church, Bardstown Road and Lancashire Avenue with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 – 8 p.m. Sunday at Owen Funeral Home-Jeffersontown, 9318 Taylorsville Road. Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Raphael the Archangel Catholic Church in memory of John V. Scanlan.
