Lewanda (Etzel) Singer, 73, of North Stonington, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, after a brief period with pancreatic cancer. She went peacefully at her home, overlooking her garden and the rolling stream.
Born Dec. 17, 1939, in Brooksville, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Virginia Rose Hahn and Lawrence Valentine Etzel. She will be missed by her son, Tab Shanafelt and his wife, Patti Shanafelt, of Hamilton, Bermuda and Greenwich and their children, Tyler and Caity; her daughter, Sandy (Shanafelt) Corning and her husband, Ted Corning, of East Greenwich, R.I. and their children, Nate and Andrew; her daughter, Kelly (Shanafelt) Drake of Beverly, Mass. and Peter Drake of North Stonington and their children, Amy and Alyssa; her stepsons, Richard Singer of Newfane, Vt., Arthur and wife, Stacey Singer, of Boquete, Panama and William and wife, Kim Singer, of Mystic; and her brother, Lawrence Etzel and his family.
Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, Lewanda moved with her children to Noank in 1965, and has enjoyed the life and people of New London County ever since. Very much a people person, Lewanda worked as an antiques dealer in New York, yacht broker at the Noank Shipyard, the manager of Jackaroos in Mystic, and most recently as a front desk receptionist at Stoneridge in Mystic.
In her spare time, Lewanda loved to spend countless hours in her garden. She had a passion for art and antiques and passed along a love for history to her children and grandchildren. Her greatest joy however was her children and grandchildren all of whom were with her in her final days and all of whom will miss her dearly.
A private family gathering will be held at the request of the deceased.
