Obituary

Charles A. Costa, 84, of Westport died Thursday, January 3, 2012 at home. He was the husband of the late Doris E. (Dumaine) Costa.

Born in Westport, son of the late John P. and Milinda C. (Vieira) Costa, he was a third generation dairyman who resided in Westport all of his life. He was a Communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport. Until his retirement, Charlie was employed by the USDA Farm Service Agency as the State Executive Director. Prior to his service at the USDA he was the Assistant Commissioner for the Massachusetts Department of Food & Agriculture.

Charlie had served on the Westport Board of Selectman for 12 years and on the Westport Board of Health for 16 years. He was a supervisor of the Bristol County Conservation District. He was a 60 year member of the Westport Grange #181, a charter member of St. Isadore the Farmer Council #4373, a charter member of Bishop Cassidy 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, a member of the Portuguese American Civic League and the Westport Lions Club. Mr. Costa served as a member of the Westport Fair association and the Westport Harvest Festival. He was also a member of the Westport Volunteer Firemans Association. Charlie was an inductee of the Westport Hall of Fame and received the distinguished honor as Westport Man of the Year.

Survivors include his sister-in-law: Rita (Dumaine) Borden and her husband Howard of Fall River; several godchildren and cousins; numerous friends; and his faithful dog: Jocie. He will always be remembered by the farming community.

Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Monday, January 7, 2013 from the Potter Funeral Home at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport at 10:00 A.M.

Calling hours Sunday 1 - 4 P.M.

Interment in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
