Obituary

WAYLAND: Robert A. “Bob” Salomon, a resident of Wayland for 52 years, died peacefully in his sleep on December 17, 2012 at the age of 102.
Bob leaves his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Michael Hargett of Johns Creek, GA, son and daughter-in-law, Robert N. Salomon and Kristin Konzak of Boston and granddaughter Amanda Hargett of Atlanta, GA as well as numerous nieces and nephews, of whom he was very fond. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Virginia Nourse Salomon, who died in 2006.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Bob always showed great kindness and support towards family and friends. Born and raised in Northampton, he graduated from Northampton High School and attended Georgetown University. The economic pressures of the Great Depression led him to leave college and secure a job with New England Telephone, for which he worked for 43 years in a variety of managerial positions before and after World War II. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served until the end of the war, rising in rank from lieutenant to major in the Signal Corps.
An enthusiastic and longtime golfer, he first took up the game at the age of 17 and played his final match at the age of 98. It was while playing golf that he first met his future wife and soul-mate, Ginnie. Another hobby was reading about American history, much of which he had lived through. Known for his friendly and helpful ways towards family, friends and acquaintances, he was well-liked by all who knew him.
Private funeral services and interment have been held for his family.
Donations in his memory may be made to Partners in Health, P.O. Box 845578, Boston, MA 02284 or www.pih.org.
Arrangements entrusted to the care of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home of Wayland.
