Charles S. “Chuck” Smart, 76, of Fitzgerald, Georgia died Wednesday, December 26, 2012, at Phoebe Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Saturday, December 29, 2012, at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. B.J. Funk officiating. The family will receive friends at the chapel after the service.
Mr. Smart was born February 21, 1936 in Springfield, Missouri to the late B.C. and Mary Brooks Smart. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War Era. His woodworking career began when he was six years old. He was the former owner of the Smart Shop, a furniture and restoration shop in Smyrna, Georgia. A wood turner, he was known as the “Bowl Man”. He made a wooden duplicate of the first bicycle that is now on display in a museum in Columbus, Georgia. He also built a cabinet for Mahatma Gandhi and other wooden pieces that are on display in the White House and the governor’s mansions of Georgia and Mississippi. He attended art shows and festivals to share his craft and love of woodworking. Mr. Smart loved to play Santa Claus during the holiday season. He attended Central United Methodist Church in Fitzgerald.
He is survived by his wife: Teresa Jean Smart of Fitzgerald, Georgia; daughters: Charlene Elaine “Charlie” Smart and Destine Smart, both of Fitzgerald, Georgia; stepchild: Victoria Jean Landrum of Decatur, Illinois; grandchildren: Robert Lee Booker III and Teresa Ann Booker.
