Obituary

Mr. Eugene R. McGivern, age 90, of Woburn formerly of Reading and Orleans passed away on Christmas night at his home, surrounded by his family, following a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Ruth (Bell) Tofalo - McGivern. Born in Watertown he was the son of Frank and Marion (Williams) McGivern.
Gene "as he was affectionately known to his family and friends" was raised and educated in Watertown. He was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran and honorably served in the Philippines during the Asiatic - Pacific Theatre of WWII. Upon his return from the service he continued his education and graduated from Boston College. He worked for many years as a Pharmaceutical Administrator and also worked for many years as a Real Estate Broker for the Caleb Pierce Realty Co. of Reading, prior to his retirement. Gene had a wonderful outgoing and happy personality. He was always positive and enjoyed interacting with people and especially enjoyed debating and conversation about politics. Gene also enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida where he built many great friendships that he cherished. His greatest joy was to be with his family and the people he loved.
In addition to his late parents, Gene is predeceased by his sister, the late Marion Tyminski, and brother, the late Robert McGivern. He was the devoted father of Kathy Kempf of Maryland, Richard McGivern of Virginia, Stacie Colbeth of Duxbury, step children, Michael Tofalo of Billerica, Denise Fowler and Kevin Tofalo both of Woburn. He was the loving grandfather of Christopher Colbeth, Liz, Amanda, Mikey, Marc, Jordan and Miranda. Brother-in-law of Chet Tyminski of Reading.
Funeral services will be held from the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Funeral Home, 60 Pleasant St., WOBURN, Saturday, December 29th, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Charles Borromeo Church, 280 Main St., Woburn, at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours at the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Funeral Home will be held on Friday from 4 thru 8 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Gene's memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
