Abington – Robert W. Benson, Sr. 81, a longtime resident of Holbrook, died Tuesday December 25 after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of the late Kathleen H. (Moloney) Benson.
Born in Queens, and raised in Walker Valley, NY he was the son of the late Melvin W. and Charlotte F. (Stryker) Benson.
Robert had been a proud veteran of the US Navy, retiring after twenty three years of service. After retirement from the Navy, Robert remained for another twenty years as a civilian employee working as an electrical engineer at the Naval Air Base in Weymouth.
He was a member of the American Legion of Holbrook where he had served as Post Commander. He was also a member of the VFW of Whitman, the Knights of Columbus of Whitman and past president of the South Shore Irish American Society.
He loved the outdoors and had enjoyed many hunting trips to Vermont.
He is survived by his children Mary Harris and her husband Willis of Abington, Robert W. Benson, Jr. and his wife Constance of Holbrook, and James Benson and his wife Judy of N. Easton and his sister Edith Josephson of NC. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Kathleen A. Benson and brother of the late John Benson.
His services will be held Friday December 28 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth St. (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will follow at 2:15 PM in the Mass VA Cemetery, Bourne. Visiting hours will be held Thursday December 27 from 4-8 PM.
