Obituary

John "Louie" Lima, 86, of New Bedford died Tuesday June 29, 2004 at Brandon Woods after a brief illness. He was the husband of Mary J. (Martin) Lima.

Born in St. Michael, Azores, the son of the late Joao and Mary (Varao) Lima, he moved to New Bedford at the age of two and lived in New Bedford for most of his life.

He was a communicant of St. James Church.

Mr. Lima was formerly employed by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 35 years until his retirement.

During World War II, Mr. Lima served in the U.S. Army, participating in the battles and campaigns of Central Europe, the Rhineland, Rome-Arno and Southern France. He was a recipient of the European-Africian-Middle Eastern Theater Service medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Lima was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Thomas E. Tuttle Post 7239 in Acushnet, the Mount Carmel Seniors, the Goodyear Seniors, the Hazelwood Seniors, the Dartmouth Seniors, the St. Mary's Church Seniors of Fairhaven, and the Bliss Corner Club.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, John Ferreira, Jr, and his wife Elaine, of Chelan, Washington and Michael Ferreira, and his wife Norma, of Dartmouth; two daughters, Dorothy Foster and Geraldine Souza, both of New Bedford; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and a great-great granddaughter.

He was the grandfather of the late Raymond Souza, the brother of the late Mary Morin, and father-in-law of the late Robert Souza, and Eddie Foster.

Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New BedfordFriday July 2, 2004 at 9 AM.Funeral Mass at St. James Church at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Thursday July 1, 2004 from 4-7 PM. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery.
