Holden - A. Brita (Carlson) Malmstrom, 94, passed away at the Ichabod Washburn Hospice Residence on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. Her husband of more than 50 years, Karl G. Malmstrom, died in 1976. She was born in Degerfors, Sweden on August 18, 1918, daughter of A. Paulina (Engstrand) and Axel T. Carlson. The family came to Worcester in 1926. Brita was educated in the Worcester Public School system and Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1941. She and Karl were married in 1941, and they lived in Worcester, Springfield, and at Chapel Street in Holden for more than 50 years. Brita was a registered nurse and was active in nursing for over 40 years. She was a private duty nurse for Harry and Jeanette Stoddard. She later was the head of nursing at Holden Nursing Home for many years. Brita was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Holden.
Brita is survived by her sister, Barbara Engberg Tilosius and her family of Sweden as well as cousins in Massachusetts, Minnesota, and California.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, December 15, at 10 a.m. at All Faiths Cemetery, 9 Island Road, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury St., Holden MA 01520 or Holy Trinity Hospice @ Ichabod Washburn Hospice Residence, 1183 Main Street, Worcester, MA 01603 or a charity of the donor's choice.
