ELIZABETH (SAMS) HAWES, age 69, of Scituate, died on Wednesday, June 16th at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston after a long battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Ms Hawes was born in San Mateo, CA and lived at various times in Evanston, IL, Atlanta, GA, France and New York City. She came to Massachusetts in 1962 and lived in Boston, Braintree and most recently in Scituate. She was educated at Radcliffe College, Emory University, New York University, Harvard Graduate School of Education and Boston College. A teacher and administrator by profession, she taught in New York Public Schools from 1959-1962; Newton High School from 1962-1967; Quincy Public Schools from 1974-1987; the South Shore Educational Collaborative from 1987-1991 and set up and administered programs on the South Shore for pregnant and parenting teens and their babies. Ms Hawes served on the Braintree School Committee from 1974-1979, the Scituate Board of Library Trustees from 1990-1999 and was a member of the Old Ship Church in Hingham. She enjoyed classical music and jazz and was a past member of the Fine Arts Chorale in Weymouth. She also enjoyed playing duplicate bridge with the Puritan Club in Braintree; reading, crossword puzzles, cats, film, politics and gardening. She leaves her husband, Jacob Field of Scituate; her son, John A. Hawes of Scituateand daughter, Arwen Hawes of Ashville, NC. She was the grandmother of Elizabeth Greer also of Ashville and sister of Lewis R. Sams of Pine Bluff, AK and Ardath S. Underwood of Atlanta, GA. A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, June 26th at 12 Noon at the Old Ship Church, 90 Main St., Hingham. The interment is to be private. Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request.
