WENHAM: Dr. John S. Mutterperl, 82, died Friday, November 30, 3012 at the Putnam Farm of Danvers following an extended illness. He was the loving husband of Cynthia (Nichols) Mutterperl.
Born in New York City on August 27, 1930, he was the son of the late Raphael and Ruth (Goldberger) Mutterperl. He resided in Danvers for many years before moving to Wenham in 1968. He also had a home in Breckinridge, Colorado. He was a graduate of Brown University and New York University School of Medicine. Dr. Mutterperl interned at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and Case Western in Cleveland before his residency at Yale University Medical School. He had also served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Randolph.
Dr. Mutterperl practiced as an ob/gyn at the former Hunt Hospital and Beverly Hospital for many years before retiring in 1993. He then went to work for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Fellows & Service Program, where he was recognized for his work in Indian Health Service Hospital. John had a strong desire to give back. He felt blessed with a wonderful family and career and became dedicated to helping underserved Native American women and children. John said: “Medicine has been good to me; it’s time to pay a little back. The Indian Health Service assignments are always the high point of my year. To me, this is ideal medicine.”
He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Winchester and the Eastern Point Yacht Club in Gloucester, where he was an avid sailor. He also had his private pilot’s license.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Louise Mutterperl and her husband, Brian Goslow of Worcester; two stepsons, Thomas Gray of Key West, FL and David Gray and his wife, Julie of Keene, NH; three grandchildren; a sister Elizabeth Novick and her husband, Alan of New Bedford and Naples, FL; a brother-in-law, William Nichols and his wife, Mary Jane of Concord, MA and five nephews and a niece. He was also predeceased by his son, John Wallace Mutterperl and his first wife, Barbara (Shulman) Mutterperl.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday in the First Church in Wenham, corner of Main St. (Rt.1A) and Arbor St. at 1:30 P.M. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
