Obituary

William R. “Bill” “Papa” Bates, 59, died on Tuesday, November 27th in the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, after a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of 25 years to the Patricia A. (Piscopo) Bates.

Bill was born in Brockton, raised in Abington, son of Myrtle (Ripley) Bates of Abington and the late Harry Bates. He was a graduate of South Shore Vo-Tech in Hanover.

Bill has been a resident of Brockton for over 30 years. Before retiring he worked at the Medical Specialties of Easton and he was an Animal Control Officer for the City of Brockton.

In his early years he enjoyed softball, bowling, fishing, watching sports and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his children, William A. Bates, Robin Kite, Heather and Gail Bates, Joy and Samantha DeCosta, as well as William, Michael and Lisa Burns. His brothers and sisters, Pauline Anzivino, Patricia Philbrook, Emily Baker, Harry Bates,Jr. and his twin brother Robert Bates. He was also the brother of the late Kenneth, Arthur and Beverly Chaffe. Bill was “Papa” to ten grandchildren Michael, Kimberly, Robert, Tyler, Devin, Madison Ronan and Megan Burns, Noah and Timothy Kite and one great grandchild Isabella Federico, his brother and sister–in-laws, Rose Piscopo, Johanne and Raymond Rone, Barbara Robbins. Phillip Piscopo, Mary and Maurie Lancaster, Chris Piscopo, Dennis Sexton and Richard Piscopo; many aunt, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to attend his funeral services on Sunday December 2nd at 3:00PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth St. (Rte. 58 at the rotary circle) Whitman, MA. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service from 1:00-3:00PM. Burial will be at a later date. Donations may be made in his name to the American Heart Assoc., Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241.
