NEW BEDFORD -- Bernice E. "Betty" (Johnson) Gardzina, 80, of New Bedford died peacefully Friday, June 18, 2004, at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home after a period of declining health.
She was the widow of Stanislaw Gardzina.
Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Calvin Johnson and Ruth Evelyn (Noyer) Johnson.
She was a graduate of New Bedford High School.
Mrs. Gardzina was a cafeteria worker for the New Bedford School Department for 25 years, mostly at Keith Junior High School and briefly at Carney Academy.
A lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church, she was active with the Mothers Club of her church and the St. Hedwig Seniors.
She especially enjoyed cooking knitting, rug hooking and quilting, and was a lover of figure skating.
She enjoyed a wide variety of music, be it classical, secular, orchestral, band or choral.
Most of all, she cherished her family.
Survivors include a son, Bruce Gardzina of New Bedford; a brother, Alan Johnson of Bethlehem, Pa.; three sisters, Barbara August of New Bedford, Priscilla Murray of Quechee, Vt., and Ruth Piva of Quincy; a sister-in-law, Stella Charros; a brother-in-law, Walter Gardzina; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Ralph C. and Elmer Johnson.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, 2004, in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford, followed by burial in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours are Tuesday from 4-7 p.m.
