Edythe C. Sheridan, 94, of Salem, New Hampshire passed away on Thursday, November 15th, 2012 at the Greystone Farm Assisted Living in Salem, NH. She was not only their longest resident, but also endeared by the Greystone Family.
Edythe was born on September 25th, 1918 in Lawrence, daughter of the late Joseph F. and Helen (McNeal) Sheridan. Miss Sheridan was educated in the local schools of Lawrence and served in the United States Army as Lieutenant Colonel and had life career as a Military Nurse.
On March 12, 1951 she officially enlisted in the United States Army Nurse Corps. Her first tour of duty assignment was Korea. She was a 1st Lieutenant during the “Forgotten War.” Before enlisting with the Army she worked as a private duty nurse. She began her 20-year military career as a nurse in an obstetrician ward while stationed in the United States.
Throughout her military career, which ended with her retirement on April 30, 1971, Edythe held various ranks in the Army Nurse Corps. Her entry rank of 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War led to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. She then held the rank of Captain during her tour to Germany, which resulted in the nickname “Auntie Captain,” the name given to her by the German orphans she befriended during her tour of duty. She moved up to the rank of Major during the Vietnam War and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Edythe was in Tacoma, Washington at the time of her retirement in 1971. She came out of the military quite decorated. She earned her Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, a United States Army Nurse Medal, an Army Nurse Medal with Cluster, a Vietnam Service Medal, a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1060 Device, Army Commissioned Reserve Medal and an Army Commission with Cluster.
Edythe was predeceased in death by sisters Helen McMullen and Phyllis Lavoie. She will be sadly missed by her six nieces and nephews and their children.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather on Monday, December 3rd, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with her funeral services to follow at 10:30 a.m. in the John Breen Memorial Funeral Home, Inc., 35 Merrimack Street, North Andover, MA, Reverend Carolyn Stevenson, of St. David’s Church in Salem, NH will be presiding.
