Obituary

SMITH, KEVIN MARTIN, Lt. Col., US Army (Ret.), of Worcester, Nov. 23, 2012.

Devoted son of Joan H. Smith of Needham, formerly of Whitestone, NY, and the late John P. Smith. Cherished brother of Eileen Smith Ewing and beloved uncle of Edwin S. Ewing, III, both of Needham. Loving stepfather of Thomas Wende, currently of Des Moines, IA.

Lt. Col. Smith's over twenty years of combined service in the U.S. Army (active and reserves) included a variety of line and staff positions worldwide, culminating as Electronic Warfare R&D Coordination Officer, U.S. Army Material Systems Analysis Activity. He was a graduate of the USMC Command and Staff College, the Armed Forces Staff College, the USAF Telecommunications Systems Staff Officer Course, and the U.S. Army Signal Officer Advanced Course.

Lt. Col. Smith's awards included the Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal, Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with Hourglass Device), Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, and various service and campaign ribbons.

A graduate of St. Francis Xavier Military Academy in New York City, Lt. Col. Smith subsequently received a Bachelor of Science degree in History from the State University of New York at Albany and a Master of Science degree in Teleprocessing Science from the University of Southern Mississippi. Later in life, Lt. Col. Smith also pursued graduate studies in Theology at Mount St. Mary's Seminary of the West (Cincinnati, OH) and the University of Wales (Lampeter, UK).

In his civilian career, Lt. Col. Smith served in a variety of executive program management and business development positions in the defense electronics arena, for companies such as L-3 Communications, O'Gara Hess & Eisenhardt, General Dynamics, Northrup Grumman and ITT Defense.

He was active in veterans' affairs, including the New England Paralyzed Veterans' Association, VFW, the Reserve Officers Association, and the Association of the U.S. Army.

Funeral from the George F. Doherty and Sons Funeral Home, 1305 Highland Ave., Needham, on Thurs., Nov. 29th at 9 am. Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Church, 1360 Highland Ave., Needham, on Thurs., Nov. 29 at 10 am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours Wed., Nov. 28, 5 - 9 pm, in the funeral home.
