Abington – Anita E. (Callahan) Minnehan 91, a longtime resident of Abington, died Tuesday November 20 after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of 70 years to the late George D. Minnehan.
Born and raised in Rockland she was the daughter of the late Albert E. and Annie E. (Phair) Callahan and a graduate of Rockland High.
As an active member of the Abington community, Anita had served as a Girl Scout Leader for many years and had volunteered to help rebuild the Beaver Brook Playground. In later years she helped to deliver Meals on Wheels, and was a volunteer at the Senior Center.
She was a devoted wife and mother and had not only lovingly raised her own three children but for several years had been a caring foster parent to many children.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and crafting and loved to bake, especially birthday cakes. She also enjoyed “potluck suppers” with her friends.
She is survived by her loving children Gary Minnehan and his wife Theresa of Abington, Roy Minnehan of Hanover, Donna Minnehan of Abington, her sisters Agnes Jacintho of NH and Arlene Harrison of Norwell. She is also survived by her grandchildren, whom she adored, Michael and Bridget Minnehan of Abington, Brian Minnehan of Chicago, Molly, Chloe and Christopher Minnehan of Hanover and Craig and Amie Chambers of Abington, and her great grandson Patrick as well as many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Albert Callahan.
Her services will be held Monday November 26 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9 AM in St. Bridget Church, Abington. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland. Visiting hours will be held Sunday November 25 from 2-6 PM.
