Virginia Gladys Setzer
April 24, 1919- November 15, 2012
Virginia Gladys Setzer, 93, of Anderson died on November 15, 2012 at Meadowbrooke Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.
She was born on April 24, 1919 in Hickory, North Carolina to Swan Grayson and Gertrude Mary Ellen Hilton. Growing up in Hickory, North Carolina, she attended Hickory City Schools. She married Arnold Setzer in 1936 and during World War II, moved to Baltimore, MD, working for Martin Marietta Co. She and her husband later returned to North Carolina and remained there until 1964. She was a homemaker and mother.
In 1964, Mrs. Setzer and her family moved to Anderson, IN where her husband took a position with Anderson University. She and her husband were very involved for over 10 years, working with many freshmen men coming into Anderson University to begin their college careers. Virginia took care of those young men as if they were her own sons. She was the "Mother". She fed many of them and shared her "sweet southern tea." Over the years at AU, many great relationships and friends were developed. Those have lasted a lifetime and still go on today.
Virginia and her husband were very active in North Anderson Church of God for over thirty years. Virginia would share her special key lime pie with many of the church people, and also with others around Anderson. It was her signature pie.
Virginia loved her grandkids and great-grandkids. They gave her so much joy and happiness. She loved for them to visit or stay over so she could fix them her special blueberry pancakes for breakfast.
She was a Daughter, Sister, Sister-in-law, Wife, Mother, Mother-in-law, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother! Virginia filled all of these roles well. She was loved!
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Dave Edwards of Anderson; 2 Grandchildren, David Tyler Edwards of Los Angeles, California and Natalie (husband, Dave) Osburn of Rockledge, Florida; 2 great-grandchildren, Alexis and Caleb Osburn of Rocklege, Florida; 2 Sisters-in-law, Frances Hilton of Hickory, NC and Betty Hilton of Conver, NC; and 2 Nieces, Nancy Hilton of Winston-Salem, NC and Diana Yount of Charlotte, NC.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 72 years, Arnold L. Setzer; 2 brothers, James and Leroy Hilton, a half-brother, Thurman Yount, and special cousin, George Yount.
Her funeral service is on Monday, November 19, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Dr. Rolland Daniels officiating. She will be buried in East Maplewood Cemetery.
The visitation will be Monday, November 19, 2012 from 11:00am until 1:00pm at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service.
