NEW BEDFORD — Ernest J. Chongarlides, 83, of New Bedford died Monday, June 14, 2004, at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the widower of Freda (Robinson) Chongarlides.
Born in Constantanople, Turkey, the son of the late Costa and Helen (Procopides) Chongarlides, he lived in this community most of his life. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
For many years, Mr. Chongarlides was employed in the maintenance department of Chamberlain Manufacturing Co.
During World War II, he served in the Navy. He was active at the Sixth Bristol Club.
He loved spending time with his grandchildren and was known for his weekly yard sales.
Survivors include two sons, Ernest Chongarlides Jr., and Peter James Chongarlides, both of New Bedford; a daughter, June Roche of New York City and Westport Point; a brother, Lazarus Chongarlides of New Bedford; eight grandchildren, Jessica Chongarlides, Nicole LeBlanc Culotta, Connie Medeiros, Julia Chongarlides, Peter Chongarlides, Hayley Chongarlides, Jared Chongarlides and Jillian Chongarlides; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Diane Brownell Feliciano and brother of the late Katherine Kent.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday June 17, 2004 in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., followed by burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, New Bedford, Ma. Visiting hours are on Wednesday from 6-9 p.m.
