Evelyn Gibbs Mays, 82, of Ben Hill County, Georgia, died Thursday, November 8, 2012 at the Fitzgerald Nursing Home.
Funeral services will be held 3 P. M., Sunday, November 11, 2012 at Salem Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Land, Jr. and the Rev. Brent Duncan officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7-9 at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Mays was born October 7, 1930 in Ben Hill County, Georgia to the late Wesley Gibbs and Bertha Lee Palmer Gibbs. She attended Nursing School at the Ben Hill county Hospital under Miss Katie Young, Polly Ware, Evelyn Clark, and Dr. R.M. Ware. She was a former LPN at the hospital in Macon, Georgia; Ben Hill County Hospital; and Dorminy Medical Center for 45 years having worked in all phases of care. For the last 25 years of her career, she worked in the surgical department. She lived in the community all of her life. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and the Evelyn Clements Sunday School Class.She was the church chorister for 20 years. She, along with her sisters, comprised a ladies' quartet, The Gibbs Sisters.
She is survived by her daughter: Laura and Billy Trevena of Fitzgerald and a sister: Minnie Gibbs of Fitzgerald and several nieces and nephews, as well as several great nieces and nephews. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband: Lawrence Edward Mays; brother: Johnnie Blue Gibbs; sisters: Lurene Livingston, Betty Gibbs and Peggy Griffin.
