Gloria E. (Silva) Santos 86, of Provincetown died Friday morning November 2, 2012 at Cape Cod Hospital following a brief illness. She was the loving, supportive wife of Basil P. Santos. Born in Brookline on April 27, 1926, she was the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Sears) Silva.
Mr. and Mrs. Santos were married on October 30, 1947 and for the past 65 years they have been an inseparable team. In 1947 they opened the Captains Galley Restaurant. Currently the Hot L Restaurant occupies that location. Working side by side they built a successful business and in 1954 they established a Howard Johnson restaurant at that location. In later years it became known as Basil’s. They also owned the Mews restaurant many years ago.
The winter months they would spend in Key Biscayne, Florida where Mr. Santos would manage different restaurants. Each spring they would return to Provincetown. Since 1991 Mrs. Santos has worked at Eastwood at Provincetown, a timeshare community near her home.
She attended Provincetown schools and was a graduate of Provincetown High School. She was a member of the Nautilus Social club on the outer cape and was a lifetime member of St. Peter the Apostle Church in Provincetown. Mrs. Santos will be remembered for her generosity and kindness. She found great personal joy in helping people in need and always maintained a genuine interest in the well being of others.
Besides her husband Basil, she is survived by two sons, Michael Santos and his wife Shay and Christopher Santos all of Provincetown, her granddaughter, Elizabeth and her husband Adam Curtis of Brewster, her grandson Casey Santos of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, her two great grandchildren Nora and Grace of Brewster and several nieces and nephews and her extended family at Eastwood.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Peter the Apostle Church 11 Prince St. Provincetown on Tuesday November 6, 2012 at 10:00am. Visiting hours are Monday 4-7pm in the Gately Funeral Home 94 Harry Kemp Way Provincetown.
