Sara Elizabeth "Betty" (Shively) McCord, 89, of Anderson, died November 2, 2012 at Westminster Village in Muncie.
Betty was born on October 5, 1923 in Henry County to John L. and Charline Shively. She spent her childhood in Mount Summit and graduated from High School in Jonesboro. She was a graduate of Purdue University with a degree in Home Economics and attended grad school at Oregon State. She married James F. McCord, September 18, 1948 and together they had one of the largest sheep herds in Delaware County, on their farm near Daleville. Jim and Betty became involved with the Delco Remy Travel Club, then started their own business, Wannago Travel. They later bought MGM Travel Services on East 8th Street in Anderson, which they operated for 20 years.
In addition to her many travels, Betty volunteered for many years with the Girl Scouts. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and AAUW.
She is survived by nieces Jennifer (Roberto) Reyes and Keri (Dennis) Carter of California, Nancy (Robert) Wilkes of Colorado and sister-in-law Delores Shively of California. Also surviving are special friends Michael & Beverly Pershing of Muncie; Michael Jr. & Tenna Pershing of Westfield and DeDra & Larry Waters and sons Samson and Payton of Muncie and Lois Keys of Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James in 2007, parents John Shively and Charline Shively-Province, brother John Shively and sister Anna Irvin.
Cremation will take place with inurnment at East Maplewood Cemetery at a later date..
Friends and neighbors will be received from 2 PM to 4 PM Sunday, November 11, 2012 at College Park Condominiums Club House, 1935 St. James Place, Anderson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Anderson University James and Sara McCord Endowed Scholarship Fund.
