Obituary

AGAWAM - Vincent G. Martin, 90, of Cardinal Drive at Quail Run in Agawam, died on Monday, October 29, 2012. He passed away at home surrounded by his loving family and wonderful caregivers. He was born in New York City on February 9, 1922, the beloved son of the late Joseph and Mae (Mulligan) Martin. He was raised in the Bronx, attended local schools and attended Pace University School of Business. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during World War II with the Cannon Company of the 378th Infantry, 95th Infantry Division. He attained the rank of Corporal and received the European Theater Ribbon, the Combat Infantry Badge, the World War II Victory Medal, The Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He served from the D-Day landing at Normandy on June 6, 1944 through the Battle of the Bulge, where he was wounded. Following his military service, he moved to Springfield and later lived in East Longmeadow, Longmeadow and at The Meadows in Enfield, Connecticut before moving to Quail Run in Agawam. In 1952, he joined the Milton Bradley Company as the Chief Methods Engineer and in 1956 he became the Assistant Production Manager. In 1959, he became the Production Manager and in 1964 the Vice President of Manufacturing. In 1969, he was named Executive Vice President of Milton Bradley which was the position he held until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the American Manufacturers Association and was a former Director and Past President of the East Longmeadow Chamber of Commerce. He was also a Past President of the Springfield Speech and Hearing Center and the Western Massachusetts Society for the Advancement of Management. He also served as Chairman of The United Way. In his retirement, Vincent discovered his remarkable talent for bird carving and stained glass work. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his three sisters and by his beloved wife and best friend, Alice A. (McGovern) Martin, who passed away on May 1, 2009. They were married for 64 years. He leaves his loving children, Kathleen Martin Greiner and her husband Michael J. Greiner of Marstons Mills, MA and Joseph F. Martin and his wife Kathy Tobin Martin of Springfield, his 11 cherished grandchildren, his 10 cherished great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. His relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to Friends of the Homeless, 755 Worthington Street, Springfield MA 01105.
