GLOUCESTER: Mrs. Helen Y. Carr, age 70 years, a resident of Gloucester since 1968, died Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at her home following an extended illness with her loving family by her side.
Born Yong Cha Min, in Seoul, Korea on January 14, 1942, she was the daughter of Gangnam Cha and Min Yong-il. She met her husband, George William Carr, Sr., and they married in Korea on January 21, 1963. Helen worked for many years along Gloucester's waterfront. She was employed as a production worker at ADE Fisheries and Gorton’s of Gloucester for over 25 years until her retirement. She had also once worked as a nurse’s aide at the former Greycliff Nursing Home where she very much enjoyed caring for the patients. Helen was a proud member of United Food & Commercial Works Union Local No. 15.
She was also a member of the Holy Family Parish, St. Ann Church, where she enjoyed playing bingo. Helen enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas & Atlantic City, taking bus trips to Foxwoods, and playing cards with her girlfriends. She was an avid collector and gardener. She enjoyed spending countless hours gardening in her backyard. She was very proud of her array of wildflowers that grew like a jungle. She enjoyed knitting and made wonderful blankets for her family and friends. But her greatest enjoyment was her family, especially her children and her grandchildren. She shared many fond memories of family trips to the Lakes Region and North Conway, New Hampshire, cooking large meals and having barbecues and parties for her family and she delighted in teaching Korean nursery rhymes and telling stories about life in Korea to her loved ones. She will always be remembered for her beautiful, loving smile and her tireless devotion to her family.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, John William Carr and George William Carr, Jr. both of Gloucester; three daughters, Veronica Elizabeth Carr of Melrose, Jeanette Elizabeth Nye, of Palmer, and Harriett Elizabeth LeRoux and her husband, Jeffrey T., of Newport Coast, CA; five grandchildren, Crew Philip William Ryan, Tia Elizabeth Yong Nye, Aidan James David LeRoux, Nathan Nye III, Ava Nye and a sister, Teresa Kum Haley of Orting, WA. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her grandson, Aron James Carr. She will be dearly missed by all of the special friends she made on Cape Ann that treated her like family and by her special companion and pet, Lady Dog.
