Obituary

Richard T. Smith, of Deerfield, IL, formerly of Medford died at his Deerfield home in the company of his loved ones, after a long illness. He was 72.

Raised in Winchester, Rick was the son of the late Richard M. and the late M. Lorette (Wetmore) Smith. He served in the Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Chilton. After his military service, Rick worked for the City of Medford at the Cemetery Department. He was a member of American Legion Post 45, where he had served as Post Commander. After his retirement and move to Illinois, Rick returned to Medford every year and organized the placing of flags on the graves of veterans for Memorial Day. His generous service to veterans is appreciated by countless families whose loved ones are buried at Oak Grove

The beloved long-time companion of Aimee Lang, Richard was a devoted father to Richard T. Smith, Jr and his wife Carol and Michael P. Smith, all of Medford. He was a devoted step-father to Scott Sprouse of Everett and the late Bob Sprouse. He was a loving grandfather to 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The dear brother of Dorothy S. Mann of Temple Terrace, FL, Ann S. Kerrigan of Winchester and Bonney E. Herrington of Rockport he is also survived by his dear family in Illinois: Tom, Rob, Tara and Bo Lang.

Family and friends are welcome to visit at the Dello Russo Family Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford on Thursday, November 1st from 4 thru 8 PM. A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday at 11 AM followed by burial at Oak Grove Cemetery. Relative and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
