Elizabeth (Libbey) Stallard Vernon of Hingham, passed peacefully on October 4, 2012 at her home. Betty was born to Harriet and L. Blaine Libbey on July 29, 1918 in Milford, MA where she grew up. Betty graduated from the University of Maine in 1940 and recalled her happy years there being crowned Queen of Winter Carnival, studying home economics, and working as 4H director in Maine. She married Elbert S. Stallard, a dentist, in 1943 and soon had two children. In 1945 they moved to the lovely town of Hingham partly because they like being near the ocean. They both became integral members of the community. Betty was an active member of the Hingham Congregational Church, Garden Club, VNA, Yacht Club and in 1973 she earned a degree from Curry College in learning disabilities enabling her to help many students. She had an adventurous spirit: hiking Mt Katahdin, sailing of the coast of Maine, skiing in the White Mt. and traveling around the world. Betty, with her gracious and generous spirit and beautiful smile, continuously reached out to the community and opened her home, with delicious cooking, and kind deeds with the goal of being a blessing to others so they would feel loved and encouraged. Following Elbert's passing, she married Robert Vernon, an old high school friend in 1994 and lived with him in Temple City, CA. Betty spent the final years in the care of her dear friend and caregiver, Caroline Peraino. She loved visiting Nantasket Beach and watching the children, surfers, and the Swim Across America swimmers. Betty was preceded in death by her daughter Robbin Congdon, and husbands, Elbert Stallard and Robert Vernon. She is survived by her son Robert Stallard of Hamilton MA, her daughter Jane Barnett of Fort Collins, CO, nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild as well as many other relatives.
