Obituary

Jackson Wayne “Sparky” Spires, 66, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Sunday, October 7, 2012 at the Abbeville Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M., Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald with the Rev. Ike Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends 7-9 Monday evening at the funeral home.

Mr. Spires was born December 13, 1945 in Telfair County, Georgia to the late Ellis Jackson Spires and Edna Lucille Poole Woods. Mr. Spires was a retired truck driver for D & F Grain, Flintstone Industries, Gilman and Ross of Georgia. He was a board member of the Colony City Opry formerly known as the Po’ Boy Opry. Mr. Spires enjoyed hunting, fishing, coaching football and baseball, darts, dancing and playing the tambourine for the opry. He was a member of the Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years: Mary Lou Spires; daughter: Dinah Watson; daughter: Jennifer Barber (Jimmy) Ellis; son: Larry Spires all of Fitzgerald, Georgia; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grand children; two sisters: Chris Rockwell of Warner Robins, Brendia McKeag of Centerville, Georgia; mother-in-law: Velma Mitchell of Fitzgerald and several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by son-in-law: Donald Watson; brother-in-law: Charles Rockwell and his step- father: Tommy Woods.
