Obituary

Elaine M. (Buckley) Cahill, a 46-year resident of Winchester, passed away on Oct. 5, 2012 at her home in Winchester. Born in Malden, she was the daughter of the late John J. and Eleanor (Reardon) Buckley. Elaine was raised in Malden and graduated from Malden High School in 1956. She then graduated from Boston College School of Nursing in 1960 and married Timothy (Joe) Cahill in October 1960. They moved to Winchester in 1966 and raised six children. Elaine worked as a visiting nurse for thirty-five years and played a management role at several Visiting Nurses Associations, including Malden, Beverly, Salem and Lynn. She also received her Master’s in Nursing Administration from Salem State University.

While raising six children in Winchester, Mrs. Cahill was active in many activities over the years, including the Wyman School Fair, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, health education classes, youth sports, WBC sailing regattas, and classes at Saint Eulalia’s. She discovered a love for sailing while taking lessons at the Winchester Boat Club and continued to love racing her sailboat on weekends on the Mystic Lakes. One of her favorite places was Martha’s Vineyard, where she enjoyed South Beach and sailing in Edgartown Harbor. Elaine was an enthusiastic reader who always wanted to share what she learned with others. Her adventurous spirit turned her into an avid traveler over the last fifteen years. During that time she went on safari in Africa, zip-lined in Costa Rica, gracefully rode camels in Egypt and elephants in India, toured water gardens in Thailand, and bird-watched by canoe in the Everglades. Over the years, she also continued to enjoy spending time with life-long friends from her BC nursing class. She always loved to surround herself with her large family and truly loved shopping for and spending time with each of her fifteen grandchildren. In addition to her beloved grandchildren, Mrs. Cahill is survived by her loving children: Kathleen Strike and her late husband Daniel of Melrose, Kimberly Hurley and her husband Matthew of Winchester, Jeffrey Cahill and his wife Beth of New London, NH, Christopher Cahill and his wife Lynne, and Deborah Murray and her husband Patrick, all of Winchester, and Michael Cahill and his wife Cindy of Malden. She was also the dear sister of Linda Gannon of Billerica, Richard and Edward Buckley, both of NH and the late John Buckley, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Her Funeral will be held from the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester on Tues., Oct. 9 at 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Winchester at 10AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting Hours will be held in the funeral home on Mon. from 5-8. Interment is private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Elaine’s memory may be made to VNA of Middlesex East Visiting Nurse Hospice 607 North Ave., Suite 17 Wakefield, MA 01880.
