SALEM- Retired Salem Police Officer Michael S. Pietkewicz, 81, husband of the late Sophie (Przybyszewski) Pietkewicz, of Salem, died at his home on Wednesday afternoon, February 27, 2002 after a short illness.
Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Justin and Michalina (Langert) Pietkiewicz.
Prior to his retirement in 1974, he was a police officer with the Salem Police Department for 23 years. He previously worked at the A.C. Lawrence Leather Company in Salem. In his retirement years, he drove a taxi for Irving’s Taxi and later for Witch City Taxi.
A Navy veteran of WWII, he held the rating of Shipfitter First Class and served in Okinowa and other areas in the Asiatic Pacific Theater.
A resident of Salem for over 55 years, he was a parishioner of St John The Baptist Church, a member of the VFW, Witch City Post, #1524 and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, Veragua Council #76, all of Salem.
Mr Pietkewicz is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy E. and Kevin Hagerty of Methuen, one brother-in-law, Robert Mackey of Salem, two sisters-in-law, Patricia White of Danvers, Jane Michaud of Salem and several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. He was the brother of the late Irene Pietkewicz, Minna Pietkewicz, Wanda Huber and Stephen Pietkewicz.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2002, at 8 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass 9 am at St John The Baptist Church, Salem. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours Friday, 4 to 8 pm. Burial is in St Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
