Obituary

Reuben L. Branam, 83, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Phoebe Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Monday, October 1, 2012, at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel, Fitzgerald with the Rev. Bobby Richey officiating. Denise Maddox will give the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Mr. Branam was born July 10, 1929 in Irwin County, Georgia to the late Robert Lee Branam and Precious Newsome Branam. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he handled mail delivery during the Korean War. He was a former employee of General Dynamics and Strongberg-Carlson in Rochester, New York. He moved to Fitzgerald in 1985 coming from Rochester, New York. Mr. Branam worked locally at Wal-Mart and as a security guard for Dorminy Medical Center and Shoney’s. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, a former member of Abba Baptist Church, and served as a red coat in the Dorminy Medical Center Auxiliary. He was an avid square dancer who loved playing music and storytelling.

Survivors include his wife: Dorothy J. “Dot” Whatley of Fitzgerald; children: Ruby & Marty Cocchiara and Louis & Barbara Branam, all of Fitzgerald; step-children: Cindy Veazey and Coleman & Norma Holton, all of Fitzgerald, and Lloyd & Pam Holton of Ocilla; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one sister: Delia Williamson of Ben Hill County; and two brothers: Edwin Branam of Cordele and D.C. Branam of Palatka, FL. Several nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Susie Nell Moffitt Branam; a daughter: Cecilia Ann Brown; four brothers; and two sisters.
