LEICESTER;Joseph J. DeStratis, Sr. 80, of 598 Henshaw St. in the Rochdale section of Leicester, beloved father, grandfather and brother died Sunday, May 30 at Jewish Healthcare Center in Worcester. His wife of 55 years, Shirley J. (Greiner) DeStratis died in 2000. He leaves three sons Joseph J. DeStratis, Jr. of Ft.Worth, Tx., Daniel J. DeStratis of Rochdale and George F. DeStratis of Bridgeport, Tx., four daughters Barbara L. DeStratis and Susan M. DeStratis of Rochdale, Diane M. Connors of Worcester and Theresa L. DeRoy of Douglas, two brothers Cosmo and Anthony DeStratis of Worcester and a sister Ida Trzcinski of Worcester, seven grandchildren, Bryan and Tracey Connors, Nicole and Patrick DeRoy, Ty, Victoria and Joseph D. DeStratis, nieces and nephews.Mr. DeStratis was a furniture refinisher for several area furniture stores including Eddy's, O'Coin's, and Bay Path Furniture Stores. Previously he worked for many years in autobody repair. Joe, a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, served aboard the USS Canberra in the Asiatic/Pacific Theater. He was a member and three time commander of the Shannon-Davis American Legion Post 205 in Rochdale, a member of the Cherry Valley American Legion Post 443 and a life member of the V.F.W. Post 6907 in W.Boylston. Born in Worcester, he was the son of Anthony and Mary (Cancelmo) DeStratis. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 2 at 10 a.m. in the MORRISON-MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 1131 Main St.,Leicester. Burial will follow with Military Honors in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are Tuesday, June 1 from 5 to 8p.m. Flowers are to be omitted and contributions made to any veterans charity.
