Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Mary T. (Santaniello) Salvas, 91, a longtime resident of the East Springfield section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, September 26, 2012. She passed into Eternal Life at the East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born at home in the Thompsonville section of Enfield, Connecticut on November 4, 1920, a beloved daughter of the late Angelo and Giuseppina (Patronaggio) Santaniello. She was raised in Thompsonville, graduated from Enfield High School, and moved to the East Springfield section of Springfield in 1944 where she lived for the remainder of her life. She was last employed at the former Springfield Wire Company and had previously been employed at the former Springfield Armory. Mary was a volunteer at Loaves and Fishes in Springfield and previously assisted with the Cub Scouts and the Saint Mary’s Little League. Mary and her husband Charles enjoyed traveling throughout Western Mass and the surrounding area including Lake George and Canada. Active in her faith, she was a longtime communicant of Saint Mary Church, which is now Mary, Mother of Hope Church, in East Springfield. Mary was a quiet woman who adored her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her dear brother, Joseph Santaniello and her loving son, Rudolph R. “Rudy” Salvas, who was Called Home on January 11, 2012. She leaves her beloved husband and best friend, Charles R. Salvas. They were married at Saint Patrick Church in Thompsonville on June 24, 1944 and were blessed with over 68 years of happiness together. She also leaves her devoted daughter-in-law, Patricia L. Salvas, of Springfield; her cherished grandchildren, Robert F. Salvas and his wife, Lisa, of Ludlow and Jennifer A. Ross and her husband, Jeff, of Springfield; her four cherished great-grandchildren, Michael and Elizabeth Salvas and Justin and Jenna Ross; her dear sister, Virginia Rae, of Wilbraham; several dear nephews and nieces; and her dear extended family members, Marie Pervonga and her partner, Ted Robidoux, of Springfield. Her family would like to extend their appreciation to the entire staff at the East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Home for the wonderful care that they gave to Mary and her husband, Charles, who is a resident there. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, October 2, 2012, beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, East Springfield, MA 01104. Her Committal Service will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, October 1, 2012, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family has requested that memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Enfield Food Shelf, Inc., PO Box 699, Enfield, CT 06083.
