Surrounded by his loving family, Stephen Baker, Jr., of Hingham died on Wednesday, Sept. 12. Born in Boston in 1925 to Stephen Baker and Alice Fleck Baker, he is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Harriet Moynahan Baker. The father of Stephanie Andersen and her husband Neil of Hingham, Susan Hayward and her husband Gregory of Plymouth, Stacey Baker Marcellino and her husband James of Milton and Stephen F. Baker and his wife Claudette of Carlsbad, California. Grandfather of Sean Hayward, Clifton Hayward, James Marcellino, Marianna Marcellino, Stephen F. Baker, Jr. and Abigail Baker. Great grandfather of Emily and James Hayward. Brother of the late Catherine Baker Zimpel and Martha Baker Smith.
Upon graduating from Dorchester High School for Boys he volunteered for the United States Navy during World War II. A veteran of the Invasion of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, his ship the USN Landing Craft Infantry 401 was part of the first landing on Omaha Beach. He received the Normandy Service, American Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign and World War II Victory medals and the Combat Action Ribbon.
He attended Wentworth Institute of Technology studying architectural design and construction engineering. He founded his building and design company in 1946. As a builder of custom homes and commercial properties, he was the recipient of numerous awards for architectural design and historic preservation. Mr. Baker was one of the founders and a charter director of the Lincoln Trust Company of Hingham, now part of Citizens Bank. He was a Mason for over 60 years where he served as District Deputy Grand Master of the West Roxbury-Dorchester Lodge.
As a 57 year resident of the Town of Hingham, he was an active member of the community, involved with the Hingham Historical Society, the South Shore Conservatory of Music and The Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist. An avid skier, sailor and tennis player. He is a former member of the Hingham Yacht Club and the Neighborhood Club of Quincy. In retirement he enjoyed crafting fine reproduction furniture, dial and case clocks. He and his wife traveled frequently to Great Britain to pursue their interest in architecture and antiques. He was an honorary member of the Red Lion Taverners, Mayfair London. He and his wife wintered in St. Croix, US Virgin Islands for the past 30 years where they were members of the St. Croix Yacht Club, Ha’Penny Beach Club and St. Croix Landmark Society.
A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Parish of St. John the Evangelist, 172 Main St., Hingham on Thursday, September 20th at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hingham Historical Society, P.O. Box 434, Hingham, MA 02043
