John R. Lopes, 49, of New Bedford died Wednesday February 27, 2002 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Sandra M. (Viveiros) Lopes, and son of Thomas and Catherine (Perry) Lopes of New Bedford.
Mr. Lopes was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford for most of his life.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
Mr. Lopes was employed as a chef at the Mattapoisett Inn, the Main Event and the Vault Restaurant.
He served in the U.S. Army. An avid sports fan, he loved all of the New England sports teams, especially the New England Patriots. He enjoyed nature and science, and loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife; his parents; a son, Edward M. Pacheco of South Dartmouth; a brother, Thomas D. Lopes of New Bedford; 4 sisters, Patricia Horner, Leonora Tourinho, Dolores Tavares and Deborah Ramos, all of New Bedford; 2 granddaughters, Kayla Wesoly and Ashley Pacheco; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Saturday March 2, 2002 at 8 AM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Churchat 9 AM. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday evening 6-9 PM.
