Obituary

Gertie M. Miller
October 29, 1914 - September 17, 2011

Gertie M. (Andrew) Miller, 96, of Anderson, died Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Bethany Pointe Health Campus following an extended illness.

She was born on October 29, 1914 in Federalsburg, Maryland to Albert T. Andrew and Minnie T. (Shick) Andrew. She spent her childhood in Maryland and graduated from high school there. She attended Anderson College and graduated in 1937 with a B.A. degree. During her student days, Gertie sang soprano in the Anderson College Women's Quartet, which was the very first student tour group to represent the college. In 1938 she married T. Franklin Miller, and joined him in pastoral ministry in Boston, Massachusetts. T. Franklin and Gertie returned to Anderson in 1943, where they resided for the remainder of their lives.

The Millers were active members of Park Place Church of God. Gertie was a Sunday School teacher and frequently served as a soloist and choir member. She was a writer of Sunday school materials and was a member of the national curriculum committee of the Church of God. She served as a Boy Scout den mother, and a Girl Scout leader. She was a volunteer for the Anderson YWCA, Community Hospital Pink Lady program, and the Women's Auxiliary of the Anderson Symphony Orchestra. Most of all, she loved looking after her family. She related beautifully to young children, and was a loving friend to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was blessed with the gift of hospitality, and loved to "extend the table" to extra guests. Her delicious meals were lovingly prepared and beautifully served. Her apple pies were legendary. During her final years, she was well cared for at Bethany Pointe Health Campus, where she could often be heard singing the great hymns of her faith in her beautiful, clear soprano voice, touching all those who heard; she was also a featured soloist for the Bethany Pointe Choir. The family is grateful to the Bethany Pointe staff for making her final years rich, safe and happy.

She is survived by her 2 children, Dr. Thomas Miller of Lake Oswego, Oregon and Sue (Rev. L. Spencer) Spaulding of Anderson; daughter-in-law Sandra Haynes Miller of Lake Oswego, Oregon; 3 Grandchildren: Thomas Scott (Sandy) Miller of Smithburg, MD; Gwen Spaulding Barclay (husband Michael) of Overland Park, KS and Christy (husband Marc) Boyer of Sarasota, FL; 5 great grandchildren: Colin and Eleanor Spaulding-Barclay, Clay, Glen and Frankie Boyer; and nieces and nephews: Richard Andrew, Dale Nye, Darlene Jeffries, Lois Roberts, Dr. Beverley Pitts and Becky Pence.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband Dr. T. Franklin Miller on February 14, 2004, her 3 brothers, Russell, Harold and Virgil Andrew and 2 sisters Florence Andrew and Lettie Meredith.

Service will be on Saturday, September 24 at 11:00 A.M. at the Park Place Church of God with Dr. David Markle officiating. Friends may call from Friday, September 23 from 4-6 at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service and Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will take place at East Maplewood Cemetery on Monday, September 26, at 10:00 AM with Rev. Don Collins conducting the service of committal.

Memorial Contributions maybe given to Park Place Church of God Endowment Fund or to Anderson University School of Theology, Gertie and T. Franklin Miller Scholarship Fund.
