Col. William J. Gray M.D. (ret.)

Col. William J. Gray M.D. (ret.) age 75, a resident of Primrose in Anderson, died on October 27, 2011. He was born on February 24, 1936 in Anderson, the son of James Warren and Mary Louise (Avery) Gray. He grew up and lived in Anderson for many years, and had also resided in Hawaii for 37 years.
He was a retired Colonel of the US Army. He was a family practice physician in Anderson for 10 years and then served with the US Army. He was a member of the First Baptist Church for over 70 years. He raised orchids and served as president of the Honolulu Orchid Society, and belong to four other orchid clubs. He was a certified orchid judge. He was a former member and president of the Anderson Lion's Club, and he was a model train enthusiast, and enjoyed all forms of automobile races.
Survivors include: 7 children: Kelly (Don) Gentry of West Lafayette, Kristi (Glen) Paul of Austin, TX, Karin Gray MD of Jasper, Kathy Gray of Jasper, Julie ( Wayne) Allman of Anderson, William James (Jennifer) Gray II of Frankton, and Devin ( Rachel) Gray of Ashburn, VA. 2 stepsons: Doug and David Johnson of Honolulu, HI. 12 granchildren: 4 siblings: Dale ( Brenda) Gray MD of Albuquerque, NM, Don (Carolyn) Gray of Anderson, Patricia (Frank) Walls of Anderson, and Deborah (Ron) Hinkle of Kempton, IN, numerous cousins, an aunt, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet K. Gray.
Services: A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 31, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Anderson. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at a later date in Hawaii with full military honors.
Memorial Contributions may be given to the American Cancer Association, American Heart Association or the First Baptist Church in Anderson.
