CHICOPEE – James W. “Scotty” Scott, 81, of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Friday, August 31, 2012. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in the Borough of Brooklyn in New York City, a beloved son of the late William R. and Helen R. (Garvey) Scott. He was raised in Brooklyn, attended local schools and lived in the city for many years. In 1949, at the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during the Korean War, receiving the Korean Service Medal. In1953, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served during the Vietnam War. He retired from the United States Air Force at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee in 1970 with the rank of Technical Sergeant after proudly serving his country for nearly 21 years. Following his retirement, he settled in Chicopee with his family and began a new career as a mail handler for the United States Postal Service. He worked at the Tapley Street Bulk Mail Center and later at the Bulk Mail Center in the Indian Orchard section of Springfield. Following his retirement from the Postal Service, he was employed for many years as a bus driver for Laidlaw Transportation Company. He was a member of the Amvets and the American Legion. He was a loving man who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear brothers, William Scott and Peter Hagan; and his dear sister, Dorothy Hagan. He leaves his devoted children, James P. Scott and his wife, Donna, of Chicopee, John P. Scott of Chicopee, Shari C. Scott-Smith and her husband, Paul, of Ludlow, Shelly Bzdick and her husband, Jeff, of Parish, NY, Wayne Scott and his wife, Tamela, of Justin, TX and Jeffrey P. Scott and his wife, Darcy, of Chicopee; his 13 cherished grandchildren, Jessie Westbrook and her husband, Billy, Katie Scott, Shannon and Kelsey Scott-Smith, Rebekah Mann and her husband, Chris, Jason and Eric Bzdick, Kadaen, Kylea, Kameron and Kason Scott and Haleigh and Sean Scott; his second wife, Ruth Scott; and his many dear nephews and nieces. His funeral service will be held on Thursday morning, September 6, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.). His Committal Service with Military Honors will follow the service at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
