Holden - Richard E. Scanlon, 82, passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2012, surrounded by his family at University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center - University Campus. He leaves his wife, Joan L. (Conrad) to whom he was married for 47 years; his son, Sgt. Richard E. Scanlon, Jr., Ret., and his wife Wendy; his granddaughter, Kathryn Scanlon of Oxford and her fiancé, James Vear; a brother, James J. Scanlon of Chelmsford; three sisters, Pelma Gallant of Worcester, Beverly Cawley of Dedham, and Martha Lee of Florida.
Richard was born in Worcester, son of the late James and Palma (Giguere) Scanlon. Soon after he was born, the family moved to South Boston. Dick enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1948 and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired from the Navy in 1971 as Chief Petty Officer. Dick continued his career as Operational Engineer at University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester. He resided in Worcester until recently moving to Holden. He enjoyed golfing, his dog "Roxy" and vacationing in Maine.
Calling hours will be held at Nordgren Memorial Chapel from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, August 30. A service will follow calling hours at 8 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Worcester Animal Rescue League, 139 Holden St., Worcester MA 01606.
