Obituary

CHICOPEE – Rita C. (Labonte) Daviau, 88, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, August 22, 2012. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born at home on Marcelle Street in the Aldenville section of Chicopee on September 2, 1923, a beloved daughter of the late Hormidas and Alice (Kilday) Labonte. She was raised in Chicopee, attended Saint Joan of Arc Elementary School and Chicopee High School and lived in the Aldenville section of the city for her entire life. During her early years, she was employed at the former F.W. Sickles Company and later worked at the A. G. Spalding Company, both in Chicopee. For many years, Rita and her late husband, Edward ran a milk delivery business and were well known in the local area, delivering milk in Holyoke, South Hadley and Granby. As their family grew, Rita became a stay at home mom to raise her children whom she adored and showered with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. During her younger years, Rita was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps in Chicopee. Active in her faith, Rita was a lifelong communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Aldenville. Besides her parents, Rita was predeceased by her dear brothers and sister, Alfred and Joseph “Nappy” Labonte and Beatrice Cooney. She was also predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Edward P. Daviau who was Called Home on February 21, 2002. They were married on September 26, 1942 at Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee and were blessed with nearly 60 years of happiness together. She leaves: her nine loving children, Edward A. Daviau and his wife, Sandy, of Rowe, MA, Therese B. “Terry” Boncavage and her husband, Jerry, of East Berlin, PA, Richard A. “Rick” Daviau of Chicopee, Roger J. Daviau of Warren, Suzanne M. “Sue” Grandmont and her husband, Rene, of Palmer, Raymond F. Daviau and his wife, Gail, of Chicopee, Dianne R. Haney, Walter C. “Charlie” Daviau and Frank Spinelli, all of Chicopee; her 13 cherished grandchildren; her 23 cherished great-grandchildren; her dear sister-in-law, Anita Peloquin of Ludlow; and her many dear nephews and nieces. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday morning, August 28, 2012 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, August 27, 2012 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to Saint Joan of Arc School, 587 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
