Paul C. McCann, age 80, formerly of Brockton, died July 24, 2012 following a period of failing health. Mr. McCann was born in Brockton on April 16, 1932, and was the son of the late Dr. Charles D. and Rose (Buckley) McCann. After serving as a medical corpsman in the U.S. Navy, attached to the U.S. Marines, Mr. McCann earned his Bachelor’s degree as well as his MBA from Babson College in Wellesley. His career began at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington D.C., where he rose to become Special Assistant to the Executive Vice President, and finally, President of the Loan Committee.

He then moved with his family to Liberia in Africa, where he was President of the Liberian Bank for Industrial Development and Investment. While in Liberia, he was awarded a medal, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of Africa, by Liberia’s President, William Tubman. While in his next position as President of Korea Capital Corporation in Seoul, Korea, he was decorated similarly by Korean President Pak-Chong Hee. During his time in Korea, he was elected President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Seoul.

After several years in Seoul, Mr. McCann and his family moved to Singapore, where he was hired as Managing Director and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Asian Euro-American Merchant Bank, also known as ASEAM Bank. Upon returning to the U.S., Mr. McCann became a Director of Merchant Banking Venture Partners, in southern California, as well as an Officer of Imperial-Comerica Bank in Los Angeles.

During his career Mr. McCann organized the business community to help pay for numerous life-changing operations such as fixing cleft palate and spinal cord injuries, on both children and adults in various countries throughout the world. He was an avid tennis player, and a fervent football fan, having played quarterback at Middlesex Academy in Concord, MA during high school. He had a terrific sense of humor and loved being Irish! He enjoyed spending time and eating fried clams at Point Independence in Onset, where he summered with his family as a child.

He is survived by his former wife Peggy (Sullivan) McCann of Falmouth, his children Paul C. McCann, Jr., of Huntington Beach, CA, James McCann and his wife E’Lona of Wichita, KS, Margaret Kantrowitz and her husband Michael of Sherborn, Mary Newton and her husband Dr. Carter Newton, of Tucson, AZ, Elizabeth Dermody, of Raynham, Amy Balestieri, of Holliston, and William McCann and his wife Laurie of Bourne. He is also survived by his brother Frederic McCann of Maryland, as well as thirteen grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family is extremely grateful to the incredible staff at the PACE program of Mattapan who cared for him for the last several years as well as the staff at the Bay View (Compass) Assisted Living of South Boston and the Cedar Hill Health Center of Randolph. Their care of and kindness to Paul was greatly appreciated. A private graveside service will be held by his family in Calvary Cemetery.
