Warren S. Cooke, 89, of Hampstead, NH died Tuesday August 14, 2012 in the Parkland Medical Center, Derry, NH. Mr. Cooke was born in Medford, MA on November 4, 1922, a son of the late Harry L. and M. Emma (McCoy) Cooke. He was a WWII Army veteran and later served in the Massachusetts National Guard. He received his Masters in Education from Salem State College, Salem, MA. For most of his life Mr. Cooke was employed as a school teacher and also held various part time positions with several companies. Mr. Cooke started a soccer program at Hampstead Central School in 1967 and organized an Elementary/Junior High School league with area towns in 1969. He joined the NH Soccer Officials Association in 1975 and officiated games until the age of 65.
He had been a member of Hampstead Congregational Church since 1960. He was a past member of the Hampstead Fire Department, Hampstead Civic Club, as well as a church and library trustee. He was a member of the Retired NH Teachers Association, the NEA and the American Legion Carl Davis Post #34 in Plaistow, NH.
Outside of his teaching, Mr. Cooke most enjoyed family, camping, hunting and fishing. He also loved to read and sing. Since his retirement in 1983 he and his wife have enjoyed the RV lifestyle. They have traveled through and slept in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jeanne L. (Morin) Cooke of Hampstead; daughters Jean Anne Hunt and her husband Bob of Hillsboro and Sue Cooke of Hampstead; son Roger Cooke and his wife Kara of Ripon, WI. Survivors also include eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three nieces, and six grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his two sisters, brother and niece.
Calling hours were held Monday August 20, 2012 from 6 – 8pm in Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. Following cremation, private burial will be in West Hampstead Cemetery.
