Abington - George D. “Mike” Minnehan 92, a longtime resident of Abington, died surrounded by his loving family, on Friday August 10. He was the beloved husband of 69 years to Anita E. (Callahan) Minnehan.
Born and raised in Brockton he was the son of the late John and Mary (Fisher) Minnehan and a graduate of Brockton High.
Prior to his retirement, Mike had been a longtime employee of the former General Dynamics of Quincy, where he had worked as a structural engineer.
For many years Mike had been an active resident of Abington, where he along with his wife Anita, had not only raised their own three children, but had been caring foster parents to numerous children throughout the years. For years he had served as a Scout Master for Boy Scout Troop # 41, and in his retirement had delivered “Meals On Wheels” to those in need.
In his free time Mike was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed walking his dogs around Island Grove.
In addition to his wife Anita he is survived by his loving children Gary Minnehan and his wife Theresa of Abington, Roy Minnehan of Hanover, Donna Minnehan of Abington, and his brother Thomas “Eddie” Minnehan of Brockton. He is also survived by his grandchildren, whom he adored, Michael and Bridget Minnehan of Abington, Brian Minnehan of Chicago, Molly, Chloe and Christopher Minnehan of Hanover and Craig and Amie Chambers of Abington, and his great grandson Patrick, as well as his “grand dog” Pennie and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John Minnehan and Katherine Licursi.
His services will be held Thursday August 16 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9 AM in St. Bridget Church, Abington. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Rockland. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday August 15 from 4-8 PM.
