New Bedford – Aristides daPonte Tavares, age 71, died Tuesday, August 7, 2012 unexpectedly at St. Luke’s Hospital. Mr. Tavares was the beloved husband of Maria C. (Rebello) Tavares.
He was born in Rosaria daLagoa, Sao Miguel, Azores, the son of the late Rosa deJesus (daPonte) Tavares and Manuel Tavares doCanto. He has lived in New Bedford since 1973.
Mr. Tavares was formerly employed at Dartmouth Finishing for 22 yrs and then retired as a laborer at American Flexible Conduit.
Survivors include his wife, two sons, John Tavares and his wife Carla Tavares, Robert Tavares and his wife Kim Tavares, six grandchildren Justina, Rebecca, Zachary, Alexander, Patrick and Nikolas, all from New Bedford; two brothers Guilherme Canto, Jose doCanto of Canada; three sisters Estrella doCanto Tavares of Canada, Rosa Machado and Maria dosAnjos both of Sao Miguel, Azores Portugal; and many nephews and nieces.
Mr. Tavares’ funeral will be Friday at the Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. at 8 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9 A.M. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be Thursday evening from 5 - 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited.
